Since 1992, we’ve worked to improve literacy rates in South Carolina and beyond. Our center is the state’s designated examination site for new children’s and YA books, which are available to the public. SCCCL supports literacy by sharing a range of reliable, high-quality resources for parents, educators, and librarians. This site includes Resources for Learning at home, which can help parents and caregivers navigating virtual instruction and striving to keep kids engaged. Kids can explore the San Diego Zoo, doodle with Mo Willems, and participate in virtual storytimes, while their caregivers can learn about ways to help kids cope with the unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic.
For librarians, and anyone concerned with a child’s right to read, SCCCL shares Intellectual Freedom resources. Here you’ll find information on the First Amendment protections in place against censorship, the rights we all enjoy to read freely, and ways to respond to book challenges. We support the efforts of librarians in protecting everyone’s right to free expression and access to information. The staff at SCCCL can provide resources and support for SC librarians experiencing attempts at censorship in their libraries.

The Linda Lucas Walling collection focuses on ensuring access to all readers, including those facing physical and cognitive challenges.
Cocky’s Reading Express (CRE) is the University of South Carolina’s literacy outreach program. Founded by undergraduate students in 2005, it addressed the need to promote literacy which was evident then and is even stronger today. The student- led, mascot -based program visits children in South Carolina Title I Schools. Our impact is magnified through partnerships, education, and programming. Students, educators, librarians, and parents need to make decisions about services, strategy, and outreach based on a clear understanding of the population they seek to serve. Trained staff create and implement professional development opportunities to enhance understanding among teachers, parents, and librarians of best practices to promote learning.

The South Carolina Center for Community Literacy (SCCCL) is proud to be an SC Thrive partner site.
